SUMMARY:Pint of Science: The Future is Now
DESCRIPTION:The world’s largest festival of public science\, which offers members of the public an inside look at cutting-edge research\, is returning to Darlington for the third year. \nThe Pint of Science festival brings thousands of scientists and their research out of specialist labs and into their local pubs\, cafés and community halls to share their scientific discoveries with members of the public in an informal and relaxed setting. \n  \nFrom the Big Bang to the Future: Why Our Cosmic Origins Matter Today – Dr Atma Prakash\, Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering \nThe atoms that make up our planet and ourselves were forged in stars billions of years ago. From the Big Bang to the birth of Earth\, this talk explores how everything came to be. But more importantly\, it asks what this means for us today. From climate change to space technology and the resources powering our future\, our cosmic origins are shaping the world we are building right now. \nUncovering the Hidden Link Between Genes\, Microbes\, and Health with AI – Dr Chaimaa Tarzi\, Lecturer in Computing and Games \nIn this talk\, I will briefly introduce the modelling pipeline used in my research\, including how we reconstruct genome-scale metabolic models\, simulate interactions between microbial communities\, and integrate machine learning approaches to predict microbiome behaviour in health and disease. I will also highlight some current challenges\, such as modelling microbial interactions at scale\, as well as the opportunities that AI offers for integrating complex biological data. \nDigital Forensics: the most important tool in solving crime – Ben Findlay\, Senior Lecturer in Computing and Digital Forensics \nToday\, 90% of all crimes involve at least one digital device. The investigation of digital technology provides answers to investigative questions that often cannot be answered through other means. This talk will explore the crucial role that such technology plays in modern\, everyday society\, and how that same technology can be utilised in investigations to solve cases\, catch dangerous criminals and ultimately protect the most vulnerable in society. \n\n\nTickets £5.00 available here:\nDoors From: 6:30PM\nEvent Starts: 7:00PM (Approximately)\n14+ (Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult)\nSeated Event \nBefore attending please read our Covid-19 Disclaimer and check out our Venue Info Page

SUMMARY:Pint of Science: Nature to Nurture
DESCRIPTION:The world’s largest festival of public science\, which offers members of the public an inside look at cutting-edge research\, is returning to Darlington for the third year. \nThe Pint of Science festival brings thousands of scientists and their research out of specialist labs and into their local pubs\, cafés and community halls to share their scientific discoveries with members of the public in an informal and relaxed setting. \nNo boundaries for enzyme discovery to synthesise useful chemicals and pharmaceuticals\n\n\nDr Mohammad Dadashipour (Dadashi) (Lecturer in Biotechnology ) \n\nEnzymes are specialised proteins produced by different organisms during evolution to enable life and function. Enzymes have found invaluable applications in various industries\, including personal care and laundry\, food\, pharmaceutical and fine chemicals. Dadashi will quickly review his journey of enzyme discovery from different organismal sources and provide examples of their applications in daily life\, including a very recent one stemming from his doctoral research in the treatment of cystic fibrosis and COPD.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Slimy Superfood: The Unexpected Story of Chia\n\n\nDr Maria Dimopoulou (Senior Lecturer in Food Science and Technology) \n\nChia seeds are everywhere\, in smoothies\, puddings\, and “superfood” claims\, but what actually happens when these tiny seeds meet your mouth? This talk uncovers the surprising science behind chia’s gel-like coating\, how it transforms in saliva\, and why this unusual behaviour could help us design safer\, easier‑to‑swallow foods for an ageing population. From viral health trends to the physics of eating\, join us to discover the hidden world inside every spoonful of chia.\n\n\n\n\nToxic proteins and the brain’s plumbing system\, what can they tell us about dementia?\n\n\n\nDr Lauren Walker (Lecturer in Biomedical Science) \n\nDementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is one of the most common types of dementia but you have probably never heard of it. It shares symptoms with both Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease\, which can make things confusing for patients\, families\, and even doctors. In this talk\, I’ll explore what we’ve learned about the condition by looking closely at brains donated for research from people who lived with DLB. One focus of my research is what happens in the brain’s plumbing system\, the blood vessels. Toxic proteins (unlike the ones you eat) can build up in blood vessels in people with dementia and cause problems with thinking and learning skills. By finding ways to unblock the plumbing system we can hopefully help people with dementia live better for longer.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets £5.00 available here\nDoors From: 6:30PM\nEvent Starts: 7:00PM (Approximately)\n14+ (Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult)\nSeated Event \nBefore attending please read our Covid-19 Disclaimer and check out our Venue Info Page

SUMMARY:Pint of Science: Unseen Worlds: Microbes and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:The world’s largest festival of public science\, which offers members of the public an inside look at cutting-edge research\, is returning to Darlington for the third year. \nThe Pint of Science festival brings thousands of scientists and their research out of specialist labs and into their local pubs\, cafés and community halls to share their scientific discoveries with members of the public in an informal and relaxed setting. \n  \nScience of Superbugs – Dr Bruno Silvester-Lopes\, Senior Lecturer in Microbiology \nAs the world evolves\, there is an emerging threat from infectious diseases and the dangerous role bacteria play. This talk aims to answer the following questions: What are pink microbes? Where do infectious diseases emerge? How do they spread? What is antimicrobial resistance\, and how can we protect ourselves? And tries to highlight the new solutions which are emerging. \nWhen antibiotics fail: Superbugs and the fight for sight – Dr Faith Ukachukwu\, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Optometry \nAntibiotics have transformed modern medicine\, but what happens when they stop working? Around the world\, bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics\, creating dangerous “superbugs” that are harder to treat. Some are now resistant to both single and combination antibiotics\, while very few new drugs are being developed. \nThis growing problem could make even common eye infections more serious and put sight at risk. This talk explores why antimicrobial resistance matters\, how bacteria outsmart current treatments\, and how natural product therapies could offer affordable\, safer\, and effective alternatives to help protect vision in the future. \nWhy fungi matter more than you think – Dr Takanori Furukawa\, Vice-Chancellor’s Research Fellow \nDo you like fungi? Perhaps it’s because they are behind some of humanity’s great inventions\, such as beer\, wine\, bread\, and antibiotics. Or maybe you dislike fungi because you simply don’t enjoy the taste or texture of mushrooms\, or because you keep encountering black mould thriving in your bathroom. Either way\, fungi have a tremendous impact on our lives both in GOOD and BAD ways. This talk will introduce the Funtastic microworld of fungi and explore why they matter more than you think in global public health. \n\n\nTickets £5.00 available here\nDoors From: 6:30PM\nEvent Starts: 7:00PM (Approximately)\n14+ (Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult)\nSeated Event \nBefore attending please read our Covid-19 Disclaimer and check out our Venue Info Page\n\n

SUMMARY:Smoove & Turrell
DESCRIPTION:The story of Smoove & Turrell began in the post millennium North East of England with a group of working class lads and a shared passion for soul.\nTheir first track was the now classic ‘I Can’t Give You Up’ recorded at Mike Porter’s house as his Hammond Organ was immovably wedged in his utility room! If you listen closely to the (now extremely expensive) original 7 inch recording released on the German label Club Tikka you can still hear Mike’s mum retrieving a pack of peas from the freezer… The track was so popular in the underground Mod and Northern soul scene all initial 500 pressings of the record sold out\, resulting in online bidding wars\, with the record going for as much as £160. \nIt was in fellow soul head Craig Charles that they found their first radio champion as he supported them heavily on ‘The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show’ which was a kick-starter for their assault on national radio eventually landing Radio 2 record of the week twice and a playlist on 6 Music. \nBy the time their second album – Eccentric Audio was released the band had already been touring far and wide building up a loyal fan base helped by continued support from radio which culminated in two playlists and a New Year’s Eve live session on Radio 2. With two critically acclaimed albums under their belts and word starting to spread across the pond to America – S&T tracks were used on TV shows\, feature films and an ABC network primetime ad campaign\, as well as in video games such as The Crew. \n2019 then saw the band celebrating 10 years in the business with the release of “Solid Brass – 10 Years of Northern Funk” a retrospective of the biggest tracks from their blistering live shows with the added bonus of two new tracks – “I’m A Man” and “Give It Back”. A sell out Solid Brass tour saw them delivering a set of strictly the hits to rapturous reception. The band returned in 2020 with “Stratos Bleu” their 6th studio album and one that continued to pair Turrell’s conscious lyricism with Smoove’s impeccable production. Keyboard player Mike Porter’s collection of analogue synths comes to the fore on the new album with a nod to the heady days of early 90’s clubbing which may be a surprise to some but in the context of this band as dance floor favourites makes perfect sense. \n‘Red Ellen’ was released in 2023\, not quite as electronic an odyssey as Stratos Bleu\, but still firmly centred on the dance floor and with an overwhelmingly optimistic message of love and compassion\, the album is tempered as always with the gritty reality of working class life in the North East of England. \nWith support from DJ’s\, Tosh & Dave.  \n\n\nTickets £22.00 adv\nDoors From: 7.30PM\nShow Starts: 8.00PM (Approximately)\n16+ (Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult)\nStanding Event\nBefore attending please read our Covid-19 Disclaimer and check out our Venue Info Page\n\n\nHow To Buy Your Ticket \n\nBuy Online\, using the box below\nVisit The Forum Reception \nCall us on: 01325 363135\nPlease note our reception and phone line are not always manned especially at busy events\, please see our Opening Hours & Venue Info for more info.\n\nA non-refundable 50p booking fee is added to each ticket when buying online.
